                              Abstract

The intent of the pattern " Relational Database Access Layer " is to 
provide an easy to handle, relational persistence mechanism for an 
application kernel's data abstraction modules, that allows efficient 
database access, long transactions and good encapsulation of database 
system aspects.

The pattern can also be used as a persistence mechanism for data 
abstraction modules that are written in 3-GL languages like e.g. COBOL, 
PL/I or straight C.

This pattern has been written as part of a larger effort to document our 
companies design knowledge in the field of business information systems.
